The lottery draws people from all walks of life, including those who would never otherwise gamble. The sexy images on billboards lure people in with the promise of instant wealth. While the odds of winning are incredibly slim, some believe that the lottery is their answer to a better life.<\/p>\n
Purchasing tickets is often an expensive habit that can quickly eat away at people\u2019s budgets and savings. As a result, the overall risk-to-reward ratio is not very favorable. Moreover, the fact that lottery players contribute billions in government receipts obscures how much they forego when they spend on tickets.<\/p>\n
In the immediate post-World War II period, many states viewed lotteries as an attractive source of revenue, one that could help them expand their range of services without having to impose especially onerous taxes on middle-class and working class families.
