Poker is a card game played between two or more players and, usually, in a tournament setting. It involves betting between hands, and the player with the best five-card hand wins the pot. Its rules are complex and the game requires a significant degree of skill. There are many variants of the game, but they all share some core elements.
The game is typically played from a standard pack of 52 cards (with some games using multiple packs or adding a joker). The suits have no relative rank in the game, and the highest card is the ace, followed by the king, queen, jack, and ten. The game also may include wild cards that can take on any suit and/or rank (dueces, one-eyed jacks, etc).
Each round in a hand includes one or more betting intervals. Each player must place enough chips in the pot – representing money, for which poker is invariably played – to make his total contribution at least equal to that of the player to his left. In addition, each player may voluntarily place chips in the pot for strategic reasons, such as trying to bluff other players.
The game is challenging – even for professional players. In fact, a large percentage of players lose money in the long run. In addition, unlike chess, poker involves imperfect information: players know their own cards but not their competitors’. This makes it more difficult to model computationally, and the first superhuman AI for the game didn’t appear until 2015.
